Natural oud is one of the most expensive fragrance materials, which is why fakes are common. These simple signs help you tell the difference before and after you buy.<\/p>\n
Natural oud has irregular dark resin veins running through lighter wood, so its colour is never perfectly even. A uniform glossy black over the whole piece can be a sign of dye or artificial polish.<\/p>\n
Before burning, natural oud has a light, gentle scent. If a piece smells strongly of perfume while it is cold, perfume has most likely been added.<\/p>\n
On the coals, the oil in natural oud melts with small bubbles, giving gentle smoke and a scent that develops and lingers in the room and on clothes. A fake smells strong at first and then fades quickly, or turns into burnt wood or synthetic perfume.<\/p>\n
Resin-rich pieces are heavy and some sink in water, but this is not proof on its own, because some fake pieces are injected with heavy materials to add weight.<\/p>\n
